The Cartesian Plane

The Cartesian Plane is a special kind of grid that helps us name exact positions using two numbers. It’s like giving every point its very own address.
The grid has:

• A horizontal line (left ↔ right) called the x-axis
• A vertical line (up ↕ down) called the y-axis

These two lines cross in the middle at a point called the origin.
The origin’s address is (0, 0).
To find a point, you use an ordered pair like (3, 5):

• The first number tells you how far to move across (x-axis)
• The second number tells you how far to move up or down (y-axis)

So (3, 5) means:

•  Move 3 spaces across,
•  Then 5 spaces up.

It works just like reading a map in a video game, plotting a graph in maths, or following a treasure map where you need precise directions.
