Grid References

Grid references are a simple way to find places on a map. Think of the map as a big board game. The lines going across and up and down create little boxes. Each box has an address made from a letter and a number.

• The letters run across the bottom (like A, B, C…)
  
• The numbers run up the side (like 1, 2, 3…)
  

When you put them together — like C4 or E2 — you get a special code that tells you exactly where to look. It works just like coordinates in a video game, or squares on a battleship board.
