Understanding Physical Attraction
What Is Physical Attraction?
As teenagers go through puberty, they may start to feel strong emotions toward other people that they haven't felt before. This might include wanting to spend time with someone or thinking they look really nice. This is called physical attraction.
Physical attraction is normal and happens to both teenagers and adults. Adults may form close relationships, live together, or even have children with someone they are attracted to.
The Role of Hormones
During puberty, the body releases hormones like testosterone and oestrogen. These hormones affect how people feel and can make them more aware of others in a new way. That’s why teenagers may notice strong feelings of attraction more than they used to.
Who Likes Who?
Everyone is different when it comes to attraction. Some people are attracted to the opposite sex (e.g., boys liking girls), while others are attracted to the same sex (e.g., boys liking boys or girls liking girls). Some people are attracted to both sexes, and some people don’t feel physically attracted to anyone—and that’s okay too.
When Someone Doesn’t Like You Back
It can feel hard if you like someone and they don’t feel the same way. This is a normal part of growing up. It’s important to remember that just because one person doesn’t share your feelings doesn’t mean no one will.
Being Safe
Feeling physical attraction is natural, but it can be confusing. It’s important to remember:
- You should never feel pressured to do something you're not ready for.
- If you feel unsure or uncomfortable, talk to a trusted adult.
- Only do what feels right for you, and respect others’ boundaries too.
