Hot Buttons & Think-Pause Strategies
Everyone has situations where something makes them emotionally hijacked. We call these our "Hot Buttons." As we have learnt in previous lessons, our reactions to our hot buttons can become hard-wired patterns (highways) that cause us to react without thinking.
We know that sometimes we react, instead of responding with reason and thought. We also know our brains are wired to look for patterns. This can be a bad combination, and result in us behaving in an unproductive or hurtful way when annoying things happen. We are responsible for our words and actions, which means we need a way to break this cycle and learn new, positive patterns.
The answer is to practise and use think-pause strategies, which gives your thinking brain time to catch up when your feeling brain is in overdrive. Everyone will have their own strategy, you need to find one that works for you. Perhaps you take deep belly breaths, list six Pokémon characters in your head or skip count backwards from 100. |
