Tense and relax your musclesWhen stress is building up, we often notice it first in our muscles. It can be helpful to tune into our bodies and notice this stress starting to build before it increases or overwhelms us.
When you notice this stress as tension in your muscles, you might do a quick stretch of your neck and shoulders. You might choose to focus your attention on your toes, the part of your body furthest from your brain. Take your full attention to your toes as you scrunch and clench them as tight as you can. Hold your toes and attention in this space for a few seconds, then gradually and gently release and relax your toes. As you do this, imagine all the stress, anxiety and worry flowing out and away from your body. If you have more time, find an appropriate place to practice tensing and relaxing different groups of muscles, one at a time. |
